Rapid Trichomonas Testing in Men

Rapid-Trichomonas

Trichomonas Vaginalis is the most prevalent STD in the world causing urethritis in men. It has also been associated with increased risk of infertility and HIV transmission (up to 2-3 times increase risk of HIV). Having said that while it is a cause of urethritis in males, most of the time men do NOT know they have been infected as they experience no symptoms. Therefore, they can easily spread it to their future partners unknowingly and because they are unaware they are infected and thus do not get treated, they are at an increased risk of infertility.

How do I know if I have a Trichomonas vaginalis infection?

In most males, you do not have any symptoms. If you do have symptoms, you may feel itchiness inside the penis or discomfort or pain when you pass urine or you may notice some discharges from the penis.

How do I test to know if I have been infected especially if most men do NOT have any symptoms?

Traditionally, tests for Trichomonas vaginalis are notoriously not good in detecting infection in males. Depending on which tests is done it may only pick up  30-60% of the infection in men. Also the test results will usually only be available after 3-5 working days.

At DTAP Clinics, we offer a Trichomonas test that is fast, accurate and painless.

What is different about the test offered by Dr Tan and Partners clinics?

  • Real-time PCR (detects for nucleic acid of the organism)
  • Very sensitive (90-98%) – compared to other tests where the sensitivity can range from 30-60%
  • Fast – next working day compared to 3-5 days
  • Can use urine sample for males

As a result of faster results, we can give the necessary treatment faster as well. Treatment for Trichomonas is straightforward and only requires taking some tablets.

What do I have to do for the test?

All we need from you is a urine sample. We recommend that you hold your urine for at least 2 hours from the last time you pass urine before coming in for the test.

So have a chat with our friendly doctors if you think you may have been exposed to Trichomonas vaginalis and discuss further.
