This is a new rapid Herpes Test offered by DTAP that offer fast (usually next working day) and accurate testing of Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and 2 (HSV 1 and HSV 2) concurrently. It detects for the DNA of the virus from samples taken from the blisters or ulcers.
Why is this Rapid Herpes Test Different from other Herpes Testing?
This is different from the usual HSV 1 and HSV 2 antibody test which may not accurately tell you whether the blisters/ ulcers you have are due to HSV 1 or HSV 2.
What Does Men’s Rapid HSV test for? HSV 1 or HSV 2?
The Rapid Herpes Simples Virus Test for the presence of the virus DNA in the blisters or/and ulcers.
The test detects both HSV 1 and HSV 2 at the same time and can differentiate them.
What are the Signs and Symptoms of Herpes Simplex Virus infection in Men?
Typically, you may notice multiple painful herpes related blisters or ulcers on the lips (Cold Sore) or around the lips or penis, pubic area and or scrotum.
Sometimes, some people may report some tingling sensation prior to seeing the blisters or ulcers. In some cases, the blisters, sore or ulcers may not be painful.
Sometimes, the blisters or ulcers may appear on the groin area and buttocks or other parts of the body.
Is Herpes Infection more prevalence in men than women?
According to the US CDC, HSV 1 and 2 infections are more common among women than among men.
It is thought that the reason for that is that it is easier to transmit the infection from men to females. See Women’s Herpes Symptoms
Is Herpes infection more prevalence in Heterosexual man than Men-who-have-Sex-With-Men (MSM)?
In some studies, the prevalence of HSV is higher in heterosexual males than in MSM.
What are the treatments available? Can Herpes be cured?
Anti-viral medications can decrease the number of days that the blisters/ ulcers persist.
There is currently no medication that will cure the infection but in some people, their own immune system may be able to get rid of the virus permanently after 1-2 years after the initial infection.

For some people, the virus may persist in their body for life and when their immune system is down, the symptoms reappear.

How is this Men’s Rapid Herpes Test Different from other Test?
Blood test for HSV only detects the antibodies to the virus and may not reflect that the current symptoms is due to HSV as in majority of cases, once a person has been infected with HSV 1/2, the antibodies may remain positive for life.
The Rapid HSV test offered by Dr Tan and Partners detects for the DNA of the HSV 1/2 virus using PCR which is accurate and rapid.
How Long does it take for the STD results to be available?
Results for the rapid HSV 1&2 test will be available next working day.
How accurate is the test?
It is 95-97% accurate.
Which areas of the body can the test be used for?
Swab of the blisters/ ulcers can be taken from any part of the body including penis, scrotum, pubic, anus, mouth.
Do I need to prepare anything to do the test?
There is no preparation to do for the test except DO NOT apply any creams or powder to the area 24 hours prior to the test.
