Men’s Sexual Health Clinic

Regular testing needn’t be something to fear, in fact it can be hugely beneficial. If everything is all clear then there is nothing to worry about at this stage. If anything turns out as positive then it can be tended to early which will have better long term outcomes.

1.) HIV Testing

HIV is at the forefront of most people and rightly so, although not for the reason you may think. Most associate HIV with a death sentence, which is not true nowadays. The reason HIV should be tested is because the earlier it is picked up the better the long term outcomes. If an HIV positive person sticks to the treatment regime they can have 40-50 years of good quality life and that is very important.

HIV testing is important for all sexually active patients but for MSM it is especially important. The reason is that this group fall into the highest risk for HIV in a sexual context. For unprotected anal sexual intercourse the risk for the receiver is 1:70. You can see this is very high further emphasising the importance of testing.

2.) Emergency HIV Treatment – HIV Post-exposure prophylaxis (or PEP)

Post-exposure prophylaxis, or PEP, is another name for emergency HIV treatment. PEP is not a cure for HIV, it is a form of HIV prevention. It is a short course of antiretroviral drugs that stops exposure to HIV from becoming a life-long infection.

Patients need to undergo emergency treatment within 72 hours afters HIV exposure.

What HIV PEP drugs do we use?

We use a variety of different Anti-Retro Viral medications in various combinations based on a patient’s specific circumstances.

We do not believe in a ‘on-size-fits-all’ approach.

Although different medicines are used, they all have to be taken for 1 month.

We use the latest Gold Standard PEP Medicines with fewer side effects and better HIV prevention. This is in accordance with the latest International Standards.

The usual costs involved are:

1.) Consultation $60-$80
(Depending on the duration of the consultation)

2.) Blood tests $140
(Full Blood Count, Liver Function, Kidney Function)

  • These tests are to establish a baseline.
  • We do not need to wait for these results to start the PEP treatment
  • You may not need these tests if you had them done recently e.g. when you did an executive health screening

3.) Rapid HIV test $50
(This is to ascertain that you do not have an established HIV infection)

4.) Medication $1800
(This is for the entire 1 month of medication. The price is the same regardless of which drug regime we use)

Total cost $2193.50 – $2214.90 with GST Maximum

If you do not require the blood tests (e.g. you have done them recently) the cost will be lower.

While no cure exists for HIV, if you had an exposure that you believe to be a risk and it occurred less than 72 hours ago you can consider Post Exposure Prophlylaxis (PEP) medication.
